General Statement Of Duties

Provides professional Realtime reporting and transcribing for court proceedings, hearings and conferences.

Distinguishing Factors

Employees in this classification have obtained their Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) certification through the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) and have a completion of at least 94% accuracy (the Colorado standard) on one of the following examinations:  Certified Realtime Reporter (CRR), Certified Broadcast Captioner (CBC), Certified CART Provider (CCP) through the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA); or the Federal Certified Realtime Reporter (FCRR).

Essential Functions Of the Position

Provides Realtime records for court trials, hearings, or conferences.

Transcribes the proceedings into accurate transcripts for purposes of appeal or by order of the court.

Identifies participants by name to facilitate reporting; reads aloud statements of participants as requested during proceedings.

Prepares and distributes transcripts and related reports and documents. Reviews transcriptions for technical accuracy.

Maintains files and records of notes and exhibits.

Performs clerical duties related to the court.

Some positions may schedule hearings and proceedings and perform computer case processing related duties.

Attends meetings and training as required.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisor Responsibilities

No formal supervisory responsibility. Responsibility for one's own work product and work within a unit performing similar functions. Rarely provides lead function, advice, or explains work instructions to other employees or volunteers.

Minimum Education

Graduation from an accredited school of reporting or associate degree in reporting and one year of experience in verbatim shorthand reporting and transcribing.  Employees in this class must have obtained their Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) certification through the NCRA and must have completed, with 94% or greater accuracy, one of the following:

  • National Court Reporters Association Certified Realtime Reporter (CRR) exam; or
  • Certified Broadcast Captioner (CBC) exam; or
  • Certified CART Provider (CCP) exam; or
  • Federal Certified Realtime Reporter (FCRR) exam

All certified court reporters must maintain their realtime classification and Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) certification by completing three continuing education units (CEUs) every three years and maintaining certification status with NCRA. Employees in this class must maintain such certification throughout their employment with the Colorado Judicial Department.

Physical Demands

The employee frequently is required to stand; sit; reach with hands and arms; and perform repetitive motions with wrists, hands, and fingers; stoop, or kneel; and talk and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. Occasionally handles emergency or crisis situations; frequently subject to interruptions, and multiple calls and inquiries. Regularly requires transcription duties outside working hours. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
