Serves as Legal Counsel to the Colorado Judicial Department on various legal matters.
Manages the legal counsel unit. This position receives supervision from the State Court Administrator or his or her designee.
Provides executive direction to the legal counsel unit.
Serves as in-house counsel for judges, district administrators, chief probation officers and other Judicial Department personnel. Provides technical legal advice to managers, supervisors and other Judicial Department personnel in order to avoid or minimize legal liability for the Colorado Judicial Department.
Conducts legal research. Analyzes and interprets laws, rules, court rulings, and regulations for clients.
Researches unique legal issues impacting the Judicial Department by identifying applicable statutes, judicial decisions, and rules.
Advises clients on legal aspects of administrative and operational issues.
Prepares and provides training on legal issues for Judicial Department personnel.
Supervises and coordinates activities of subordinate legal unit personnel.
May provide guidance on ethical issues to judicial officers.
Participates in the overall management of the Judicial Department with the Senior Staff of the State Court Administrator’s Office.
Attends meetings and trainings as required.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Plans and coordinates activities for a unit. Duties may include scheduling and assigning of work, training in all facets of work, quality control, and decisions impacting the pay, status and tenure of others. Conducts performance appraisals, and provides input into and participates in discipline, dismissal, and hiring processes.
Graduation from an accredited law school; possession of a certificate of admission to the Bar of the State of Colorado; eligibility to practice law before the courts of the State of Colorado and eight years of experience practicing as an attorney in the field of law. Colorado Judicial Department experience is preferred.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands and fingers and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. This position is subject to varying and unpredictable situations; may handle emergency or crisis situations; is subject to many interruptions; may handle multiple calls and inquiries simultaneously; may occasionally handle absentee replacement on short notice; and may involve a high level of stress, and extended hours of work which may include holiday, weekends and evenings.
