General Statement Of Duties

Manages Realtime court reporting services and provides professional Realtime verbatim reporting and transcribing for court proceedings, hearings and conferences.

Distinguishing Factors

This classification is distinguished from the Managing Court Reporter Realtime due to the number of direct reports.  A Managing Court Reporter Realtime II may be designated where there is direct supervisory responsibility for 8 or more full-time equivalent employees.

Essential Functions Of the Position

Manages and directs the work of assigned staff.  Establishes expectations, conducts performance evaluations and provides performance feedback on an on-going and annual basis.  Supervises staff by guiding, coaching, mentoring, establishing expectations, checking work product, and monitoring and approving leave.

Provides input into and may participate in discipline, dismissal and hiring processes.

Provides Realtime coverage of all hearings, proceedings and conferences.

Maintains a list of private contract substitute Realtime court reporters and reassigns resident reporters to cover other divisions to ensure coverage.

Monitors all Realtime court reporters' backlog and readjusts assignments as needed.

Establishes policies and procedures to ensure reporting consistency.

May order supplies for all district court reporters.

Reports proceedings of court trials, hearings, or conferences by shorthand, stenotype, or other methods where verbatim records are required by law. Transcribes the proceedings into accurate transcripts for purposes of appeal or by order of the court.

Identifies participants by name to facilitate reporting; reads aloud statements of speakers as requested during proceedings.

Prepares and distributes transcripts and related reports and documents.  Reviews transcriptions for technical accuracy.

Maintains files and records of notes and exhibits.

Performs clerical duties related to the court.

Some positions may schedule hearings and proceedings and perform computer case processing related duties.

Attends meetings and training as required.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisor Responsibilities

Has supervisory accountability for other employees, volunteers, or interns.  Plans, directs and coordinates activities for a unit.  Duties may include scheduling and assigning of work, training in all facets of work, quality control, and decisions impacting the pay, status, and tenure of others.  Conducts performing appraisals, and provides input into and participates in discipline, dismissal, and hiring processes.

Minimum Education

Graduation from an accredited school of reporting or associate degree in reporting and five years of experience in verbatim shorthand reporting and transcribing.  

Employees in this class must have obtained and continue to maintain their Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) certification through the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) AND must hold official status as a Colorado Certified Realtime Reporter by meeting one of the following requirements:

  • Take the NCRA CRR test and complete it at 94 percent accuracy (the Colorado standard); or
  • Pass the NCRA Certified Realtime Reporter (CRR) test, which requires completion at 96 percent accuracy; or
  • Pass the NCRA Certified Broadcast Captioner (CBC)/Certified CART Provider (CCP) skills test at 96 percent accuracy; or
  • Pass the Federal Certified Realtime Reporter (FCRR) test at 96 percent accuracy; or
  • Pass the NCRA CBC/CCP skills portion at 94% accuracy (The Colorado standard); or
  • Pass the Federal Certified Realtime Reporter (FCRR) test at 94% accuracy (the Colorado standard).

All certified court reporters must maintain their certification by completing three continuing education units (CEUs) every three years and maintaining certification status with NCRA.  Employees in this class must maintain such certification throughout their employment with the Colorado Judicial Department.

Physical Demands

The employee is frequently required to stand; sit; reach with hands and arms; and perform repetitive motions with wrists, hands, and fingers; stoop, or kneel; and talk and hear.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts.  Occasionally handles emergency or crisis situations; frequently subject to interruptions, and multiple calls and inquiries.  Regularly requires transcription duties outside working hours.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
