General Statement Of Duties

Assists the Lead Network Architect in managing the activities and operations required to maintain the Colorado Judicial Department’s Network.  This includes ensuring the stability and integrity of the Branch’s data, voice, video, and wireless network services.   The Senior Network Engineer installs, configures, monitors, maintains, supports, and optimizes network hardware, software, and communication links.  The Senior Network Engineer also analyzes and resolves network hardware and software problems, and provides training where required.

Distinguishing Factors

This classification is distinguished by exercising independent judgment and decision-making authority in the absence of the Lead Network Architect, as a part of the Information Technology Services (ITS) Division.

Essential Functions Of the Position

Acts as designated work leader in charge of network equipment.

Shares responsibilities with the Lead Network Architect in a variety of different areas, including but not limited to the Department network design, project planning and budget estimations.

Responsible for installation and maintenance of network devices.

Monitors functions of network devices within the Department network to ensure acceptable performance.

Creates and maintains documentation related to network configuration, network mapping, processes, and service records.

Responsible for incident response, backup systems and procedures and disaster recovery plans and tests.  

Troubleshoots LAN/WAN/WLAN and other network elements.

Acts as resource to ITS staff, judicial districts and external stakeholders regarding network.

Identifies, evaluates, and implements hardware and software solutions for Department systems.

Supports Cisco routers, Cisco switches, Voice and Video over IP, Data Center and Cisco Wireless networks.

Attends meetings as required.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisor Responsibilities

May have supervisory accountability, in the absence of the Lead Network Architect, for other Network Engineers, volunteers, or interns.  Plans, directs and coordinates activities for the network team.  Duties include scheduling and assigning of work, training in all facets of work, and quality control.

Minimum Education

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in computer science or a related field and four years of experience with Cisco routers and switches is required.  CCNA is required.

OR

Additional years of information technology experience may substitute for the required education on a year for year basis. Four years of experience with Cisco routers and switches is required.  CCNA is required.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.  The employee is frequently required to sit and reach with hands and arms and perform repetitive motions with wrists, hands, and fingers.  The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds or more.  Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, color vision, depth perception, ability to adjust and focus, and the ability to see clearly at 20 feet or more.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, work in high precarious places and the risk of electrical shock.  Frequently handles emergency or crisis situations and may be subject to varying and unpredictable situations and work hours.  The employee is subject to frequent interruptions, multiple calls and inquiries, and may occasionally handle absentee replacement on short notice.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
