The Senior Systems Engineer works with the private and public cloud infrastructure of the Colorado Judicial Department as a part of the Systems Engineering team. This includes consulting, planning, designing, installing, configuring, administering, and maintaining on-premise x86 servers, SAN hardware, on-premise and cloud Microsoft Windows and Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems, SaaS products and other elements of the Department’s IT infrastructure.
This classification is distinguished from lower level Systems Engineers by a greater need for independent judgment, decision-making, designing and planning to assist the Lead Systems Architect and the Systems Engineering team. Work focuses on private and public cloud infrastructure. Positions are within the Information Technology Services (ITS) Division.
Maintains the private and public cloud infrastructure.
Acts as a resource to internal ITS staff, judicial districts, other state agencies, and/or other organizational units as directed. Displays leadership and mentoring for employees at the Systems Engineer I and II levels. Provides expertise and assistance to other employees.
Assists with multi-tier architectures including web servers, caching, application servers, load balancers, and storage.
Assists with scripting and workload automation processes.
Adheres to established change control procedures and assists development team during testing and deployment processes.
Provides Tier 3 support for relevant systems.
Develops and maintains relationships with vendors.
Assists with database administration for server implementations.
Assists with Java application server configuration.
Provides architectural consulting expertise, direction, and assistance to other systems engineers.
Conducts research on emerging technologies in support of infrastructure development efforts and recommends technologies that will increase cost effectiveness and infrastructure flexibility.
Assists with duties relating to Active Directory and Office 365 infrastructure, including administration of users and groups, DNS, and PKI.
Private cloud responsibilities include consulting on, planning, designing, installing, configuring, administering and maintaining x86 server and SAN hardware and related software, Fibre channel SAN infrastructure, VMware virtualization, backup infrastructure, and connectivity to other clouds and hosted services.
Assists in operational duties relating to Active Directory and Office 365 infrastructure, including administration of users and groups, DNS, and PKI.
Public cloud responsibilities include designing, deploying and migrating systems for IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, and archiving environments.
Works closely with Lead Systems Architect to identify, analyze and select cloud services for infrastructure architecture and business applications, and proposes plans for infrastructure investment.
Assists Lead Systems Architect to develop and manage cloud infrastructure capacity plan.
Monitors, administers, and maintains cloud workloads, resource consumption and archiving.
May travel throughout the state of Colorado as required.
Attend meetings as required.
Performs other duties as assigned.
May have supervisory accountability in the absence of the Lead Systems Architect for other Systems Engineers, volunteers, or interns. Plans, directs and coordinates activities for the Systems team. Duties include scheduling and assigning of work, training in all facets of work, and quality control.
A bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited college or university and three years of experience directly supporting either Windows or Linux/Unix based servers both on-premise and in the cloud is highly desirable. Current MCSA, MCITP Server Administrator, Azure Administrator, AWS SysOps Administrator, AWS Solutions Architect, VMware VCP Cloud Management and Automation or RHCSA certification is preferred.

Experience may substitute for education on a year for year basis as follows: graduation from high school or equivalent and four years working in computer related areas; three years of the computer experience must be directly supporting either Windows or Linux/Unix based servers. Current MCSA, MCITP,: Server Administrator, Azure Administrator, AWS SysOps Administrator, AWS Solutions Architect, VMware VCP Cloud Management and Automation or RHCSA certification is preferred.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to sit and reach with hands and arms and perform repetitive motions with wrists, hands, and fingers. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds or more. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, color vision, depth perception, ability to adjust and focus, and the ability to see clearly at 20 feet or more.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, work in high precarious places and the risk of electrical shock. Frequently handles emergency or crisis situations and may be subject to varying and unpredictable situations and work hours. The employee is subject to frequent interruptions, multiple calls and inquiries, and may occasionally handle absentee replacement on short notice. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
