General Statement Of Duties

Serves as the Deputy Supreme Court Librarian and assists in the administration of the Supreme Court Law Library programs and services, including supervision of library personnel and oversight of legal research.

Distinguishing Factors

The Supervising Law Librarian is responsible for oversight of the issue-specific legal research program offered to judges statewide. This position is distinguished from other law library positions due to the responsibility for the administration of the Supreme Court’s Integrated Library System (ILS), technical services and depository, and related technology issues. In addition, the Supervising Law Librarian is responsible for the direct supervision of the Law Librarian I and Law Library Assistant positions. This position receives supervision from the Supreme Court Librarian and serves as the Deputy Supreme Court Librarian.

Essential Functions Of the Position

Supervises and participates in a program that provides complex issue-specific legal research for judges and their staff statewide.

Supervises and participates in the provision of limited research and ready reference services to the general public.

Maintains communication with other libraries as well as with other state, federal and municipal agencies, when requesting or supplying materials needed by other courts or agencies.

Assists in the recruitment, selection, and termination of employees for the unit. 

Establishes expectations of staff and provides employee performance feedback on an on-going and annual basis. Assists subordinates in establishing goals. 

Assigns duties and responsibilities to staff; develops and establishes procedures for operating and maintaining required administrative systems.

Establishes and administers cataloging and classification policies; performs original descriptive cataloging and develops all authority and shelf list files. 

Administers the library’s ILS, maintains the web catalog, and coordinates all relevant activities related to the processing of materials for addition to or deletion from the collection.

Manages the library's U.S. Depository program and supervises all phases of the government publications collection housed by the library. 

Supervises all interlibrary loan functions, both electronic and hardcopy.

Acts as liaison between the Colorado Supreme Court Law Library and related associations and vendors.

Attends meetings and training as required.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisor Responsibilities

Has supervisory accountability for other employees, volunteers, or interns. Plans, directs and coordinates activities for a unit. Duties may include scheduling and assigning of work, training in all facets of work, quality control, and decisions impacting the pay, status and tenure of others. Conducts performance appraisals, and provides input into and participates in discipline, dismissal, and hiring processes.

Minimum Education

Juris Doctor degree and graduation from an American Library Association accredited college or university with a Master's degree in library science and three years of experience working in a law library. One year of experience working with a major integrated on-line library system required.  Experience in SIRSI preferred.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk. The employee frequently is required to stand; sit; reach with hands and arms; and frequently perform repetitive motions with wrists, hands, and fingers; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and high precarious places. Occasionally handles emergency or crisis situations; frequently subject to interruptions, and multiple calls and inquiries. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
