1st Judicial District Competency Court announces inaugural docket

GOLDEN, Colo. – The 1st Judicial District (Gilpin and Jefferson counties) announced today it will hold the inaugural docket for its new Competency Court, a program designed to help address the growing number of defendants in need of competency-restoration services before their cases can move forward.

About five defendants are expected to appear for the launch of the Competency Court at 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 31, 2024.

Carr Colorado Judicial Center following a Jan. 2 break-in.

Hon. Erin Sokol appointed Chief Judge of 4th Judicial District

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Supreme Court Chief Justice Brian D. Boatright has appointed the Hon. Erin Sokol to serve as chief judge in the 4th Judicial District (El Paso and Teller counties).

As of Feb. 5, 2024, Judge Sokol will replace the Hon. William Bain, who was appointed to the bench in 2010 and has served as chief judge since August 2017. Chief Judge Bain chose to make the change so he could return to presiding over a full-time docket.

Applicants for Moffat County Court judgeship announced

The Fourteenth Judicial District Nominating Commission announced today that four people have applied for nomination to the office of county judge for Moffat County.

The application deadline was on Dec. 22, 2023. The rules of procedure for the 14th Judicial District Nominating Commission require that the names of all applicants be made public when the application period is closed. Applicants are Jay M. Cranmer, James H. Hesson, and Nichole Marie Cristee, all of Craig; and Jennifer M. Hoag of Maybell.

Hon. Kyle Seedorf appointed Chief Judge of 17th Judicial District

BRIGHTON, Colo. – Colorado Supreme Court Chief Justice Brian D. Boatright has appointed the Hon. Kyle Seedorf to serve as chief judge in the 17th Judicial District (Adams and Broomfield counties).

Judge Seedorf will become chief judge upon the retirement of the Hon. Donald S. Quick on Jan. 23, 2024. Chief Judge Quick was appointed to the District Court bench in December 2014 and was appointed as Chief Judge in December 2020.

Senior Judge, former 4th Judicial District Chief Judge Gilbert Martinez dies

Colorado Springs – The Honorable Gilbert “Gil” Martinez, a sitting senior judge and retired District Court Chief Judge of the 4th Judicial District, has died at the age of 72.

Judge Martinez was on a hunting trip with family near Gunnison when he died on Oct. 31, 2023. After returning to camp following a hunt in deep snow from the weekend storm, Judge Martinez collapsed and was not able to be resuscitated.

Colorado courts celebrate National Adoption Day; foster children to be united with permanent families

DENVER – National Adoption Day is being celebrated in many of Colorado’s Judicial Districts throughout November, with judges and magistrates across Colorado finalizing the adoptions of dozens of foster children into permanent families. Colorado is currently home to more than 200 children waiting for permanent families.

Adoption Day events in Colorado are being coordinated through the courts, state and local human services departments, as well as other local and state child services agencies and advocacy groups. 

Colorado Court of Appeals to hear arguments in Carbondale and Breckenridge the week of Nov. 6

DENVER – A division of the Colorado Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments in Carbondale on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2023, and in Breckenridge on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023, before audiences of high school students. Limited seating for the public will be available.

In addition to the events with high school students, the three-judge panel also will meet with students from Crystal River and Frisco elementary schools and meet with members of local Access to Justice committees, local bar associations and other groups during that week.

DENVER – Colorado Supreme Court Chief Justice Brian D. Boatright has appointed the Hon. Amanda C. Hopkins to serve as chief judge for the 12th Judicial District (Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Mineral, Rio Grande, and Saguache counties).

Judge Hopkins’ appointment is effectively immediately. She replaces the Hon. Michael A. Gonzales, who resigned as Chief Judge on July 14, 2023. Judge Gonzales will continue to serve as a district and water court judge.
